Hi, I’m Sarah, the artist behind Hani Blue.
From early childhood, I’ve had two loves: storytelling and making art. For years, I combined the two loves while working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. I wrote and produced for television, documentary, and branded content.
But then the pandemic hit.
Like many people, I watched my work dry up. For solace, I turned to the fiber arts that had kept my hands occupied throughout my childhood. My family was chock full with women who sewed, knitted, did embroidery, upholstered, quilted, made dolls and plushies, wove with looms, hooked rugs, made lace...
You get the picture. I had a whole bunch of meemaws, nanas, babkas, and grammas teaching me traditional women’s crafts that used low cost or often upcycled materials to create art.
Taking up those practices again was like coming home after a long trip. I found myself on a new path to making art and tell stories: the rug making practiced by my great-grandma Irma.
I use wool that is either leftover from commercial carpet production or sold by a small family-owned business. I make my own t-shirt yarn from thrifted materials destined for a landfill.
My practice is constantly evolving, but I stay true to what was taught to me by all those meemaws. I’m striving to make authentic work that is also sustainable.
